A prestigious Italian food chain is to open a new restaurant in Letchworth as part of plans to develop a new cultural and leisure quarter in the town, it was announced today (Thursday, March 28th).

Prezzo, known for their stylish, contemporary restaurants, has signed a 25-year lease for a site on the corner of Arena Parade and Eastcheap. The restaurant will have pavement tables, a first floor roof garden, and seating for more than 100 diners.

Letchworth Garden City Heritage Foundation secured the deal as part of its town centre rejuvenation strategy. The Heritage Foundation is also developing plans for a new arts centre nearby which will complement the Broadway cinema and transform the area into a cultural and leisure hub.

Jonathan Kaye, Prezzo Chief Executive, said: “We are looking forward to opening our new restaurant in Letchworth Garden City and believe that it will prove popular with people of all ages, as well as being a great asset to the town’s social scene.”

Tim Roxburgh, Projects Director of the Letchworth Garden City Heritage Foundation, added: “This is an exciting deal which will enhance the existing restaurant offer and boost the evening economy of the town. It’s a positive signal that such a well-known company is looking to invest in the town centre despite difficult trading conditions.”

Subject to planning permission the restaurant will be across two floors with five flats above and follows Heritage Foundation investment in refurbishing the building.

A planning application will be submitted this week to North Herts District Council for their consideration, and Prezzo hope to open the restaurant in early 2014.

Prezzo currently has 160 restaurants across the UK and offers a contemporary menu with a variety of pizza, pasta, salad and grill dishes with a distinctive Italian flavor.
