Letchworth has always been an internationally renowned exemplar for what thoughtful planning and long-term stewardship can achieve. Ebenezer Howard’s legacy continues to guide the Heritage Foundation as we balance the town’s distinctive history with bold ambitions for its future.
North Hertfordshire Council’s emerging Local Plan must identify land for a significant number of new homes and employment sites, in line with targets set by central government. In response, we have put forward sites that we believe could be suitable for residential and commercial development, helping the area meet these needs through a considered approach to placemaking.
As the stewards of Letchworth Garden City, we welcome the Local Plan. It is an important opportunity to shape the town’s future. As Letchworth approaches its 125th anniversary, we are looking ahead to the next 125 years and considering how carefully planned, sustainable growth can provide the homes and employment space our town needs while protecting the qualities that make the world’s first Garden City distinctive. By working with the council and the community, we can ensure that development delivers lasting benefits for today’s residents and for generations to come.
The Foundation is guided by its charitable objects and strategic aims. Responsible development can support a thriving town centre, strengthen Letchworth’s nature and wellbeing credentials, sustain valued community amenities and services, and improve prosperity for all. It will help us ensure that Letchworth remains a great place to grow up, live and work. By working together, we can steward a growing and successful Letchworth while ensuring that the world’s first Garden City remains a distinctive and thriving place for the next 125 years and beyond.
