Being entrusted to look after the world’s first Garden City means we must have a strong and skilled leadership team.
We are accountable to the people of Letchworth Garden City and have 30 Governors, 16 of which are elected by the people and organisations operating within the Garden City.
Our Board of Trustees are also in place with a responsibility to establish policy and strategy, take decisions on reports and recommendations drafted by our Executive Team and to direct our administration.

Our Team
Entrusted with the stewardship of the world’s first Garden City, we are guided by a strong and highly skilled Executive Team.
Their leadership is further supported by our Strategic Leads, who play a vital role in delivering the ambitions of Strategy 2028, ensuring we continue to uphold our legacy while planning for a sustainable and vibrant future.

Governors are appointed by their fellow Governors to serve on our Board of Trustees. Their term of office is 4 years as a Trustee and at the end of that term they can seek re-election for one final term of 4 years as prescribed in our Rules and Regulations.
Two of the places on our Board are permanently reserved for the nominees of North Hertfordshire Council and Hertfordshire County Council. These two positions are appointed annually.
Our Board elects our Chairman and Vice-Chair from its own number as prescribed in the Rules and Regulations.
Our Board’s role is to establish policy and strategy, take decisions on reports and recommendations drafted by our Leadership Team, and direct our administration. Put simply, they act as community representatives and ensure our work improves the Garden City. At the strategic level, the Trustees consider and approve policy matters, which enable us to expedite our mission, vision and objectives. Trustees do not get paid, it is a voluntary role.
On appointment, all new Trustees are invited to attend a briefing meeting with the Chief Executive as part of their induction programme to understand their responsibilities and roles.
Our Board formally delegates our management to the Chief Executive.
In carrying out their role, Trustees adhere to a range of policies including confidentiality and conflicts of interest, and they follow the standards set out in the Trustee Code of Conduct. Please note that sensitive personal data for Trustees is not publicly shared but is held and managed internally to ensure compliance with our policies including Data Protection.
Six times a year, our Board of Trustees meet with our Leadership Team to discuss upcoming work streams and address community concerns. The notes from these meetings are made available for public consumption.
