Grant funding towards weekend of Jubilee events

33 groups and around 3,880 residents in Letchworth will benefit from £11,735 of grant funding from us for Platinum Jubilee events in June.

One of these beneficiaries is the Best Before Café, a food waste initiative that operates in Garden Square Shopping centre.

Suzy Holding, Project Manager of the programme said, “We’re using the grant money to support the Garden Square Shopping Centre Jubilee event on Friday 3rd June which will take place between 11am and 2pm. We’ve asked Garden City Samba to play with lots of audience participation and dancing. Imajica Theatre will be telling interactive stories and singing songs for little ones.

"Also, the Trippin’ Rigbys (AKA the Garden City Brewery house band) will be shaking the party with Brit-pop covers from the 50s - 90s. Best Before Café will be open for rescued food and all the other shops in the square are joining in the fun. If that wasn’t enough, there will be a Sovereign Selfie booth, a 50s picnic, Kings & Queens fancy dress competition, and Jubilee activities to make it a fantastic afternoon for all the family. We’re really looking forward to it!”

Recycle and Play are a group of designers and creatives who want to create fun, dynamic and sustainable art events for families in Letchworth. We granted this group £300 for the Jubilee weekend to run an art and crafts event on Sunday 5 June from 11am on The Wynd. Families are invited to take part in an array of activities, including making bunting and using recycled materials to create a 3D palace. Lorna Burt-Curties from Recycle and Play said "We found out about the Jubilee grant programme from the Letchworth Festival website, which led us to apply for funding for our family event on Sunday 5th June on the Wynd. We set up Junkyard art club as a group of mothers from creative backgrounds to provide something fun for families in our community. By sharing our passion and skills we hope to inspire colourful learning through play. It is really important to us to keep our art events programme free so they remain accessible to all children and teenagers aged 3-16years. Several of our activities use recycled materials as we love using these ourselves and we're really keen to show how you can play and create wonderful things from items that would otherwise go in the bin.

"It is also important to us that families join in our events together. This allows time for parents to be with their children by playing, creating and exploring. Please follow us on Instagram to keep up to date with our planned events @ Junkyard_art_club"

Head of Grants and Partnerships, Alastair Stewart, said, “The response to the Grant Programme has been amazing with events ranging from local street parties through to events for the whole community. I would really like to thank all residents who have volunteered their time to turn ideas into reality, well done to all.”
