New book captures Letchworth's Arts & Crafts heritage

Letchworth Garden City’s rich Arts & Crafts heritage has been brought to life in a new book by Town Historian Josh Tidy and Aimee Flack from the Garden City Collection.

Arts & Crafts in Letchworth is packed with images from the archives of the Garden City Collection featuring architecture, interiors, textiles, ceramics and industry.

Speaking about the book, Josh said:  “Letchworth’s association with the Arts &Crafts movement is well documented, with some of the finest Arts & Crafts architects of the time coming here to design houses and interiors.  As a result, our Collection is filled with many beautiful photos, paintings, textiles and banners, some of which haven’t been seen before.

“The book is a real treat for anyone with an interest in the Arts & Crafts Movement and Letchworth’s fascinating history.”

Photos include workers at the famous St Edmundsbury Weaving Works who came to Letchworth inspired by its pioneering spirit and made fantastic tapestries, book covers and banners.

The book follows last year’s successful Arts & Crafts exhibition at the Community Museum, which attracted more than 1,000 visitors, as well as a series of Arts & Crafts explorer sessions hosted by Aimee Flack at the Garden City Collection.

Arts & Crafts in Letchworth is available to purchase from the Tourist Information Centre on Station Road and is priced at £15.
