Local writer and campaigner Jane Fae was shocked and angered by the story of Synestra DeCourcy, a local transgender woman who died in 2015 following years of rejection by the NHS.
The result is Transition Denied, an honest, open telling of Synestra's story. Exposing the prejudices faced by trans people today, this uncompromising book looks at the life and death of a young trans woman, following neglect from the NHS. Illustrated by this tragic example, Jane Fae goes on to examime the societal discrimination faced daily by trans people, and the impact that can have.
Jane will be speaking about her book: her reasons for writing it; and the wider implications for trans healthcare at David's Bookshop, Letchworth, on 9 July at 7.30pm.
She will be joined by:
-
Amanda De Courcy, Synestra's mother and, since her daughter's death, Director of Synestra’s CIC, a charity established in memory of Synestra and in support of young trans people.
-
Anna Carlile, who researches social justice and institutional prejudice at Goldsmiths University and has recently published How to Transform Your School into an LGBT+ Friendly Place
