Grants update - April 2018

April was the first Be The Best Grants Committee of 2018 and we had plenty to discuss in regards to supporting the talented residents we have in our town.

In the field of sport we are continuing to support talented Badminton player and 2024 Olympic hopeful Leona Lee with £1000 towards her coaching costs. Leona has soared up the badminton ranking tables regularly competing against older players and consistently bring home gold.   Such are her recent successes that from September, Leona will have to compete in adult competitions.

We’re also assisting siblings Saghana, Sajinth and Shiami Thayaparan with their badminton coaching. All three have shown great potential and with our support they’ll be able to receive further training sessions. And keeping up the racket sport theme, Daniel Martin will receive £500 to put towards tennis coaching.

But Be The Best isn’t just for students and as in previous years, we can also help individuals who want to develop their skills in coaching.  Aibhne O’Neil has been awarded £499 to help towards the cost of a Level 2 Trampoline Coaching Course. Once complete Aibhne will be able to coach at a higher level, giving her club more than 80 hours of additional coaching skills and opening up more training spots for club members.

Other grants awarded included:

  • Liz Harrington, £500 towards a dark room at Fenners
  • The Settlement Players, £375 towards a creative workshop
  • Mateo Jesalva, £500 towards Grade 5 Music Theory
